It has the brand new concepts and unique presentation style. You’ll get exactly what you can expect from Mega Man series. The latest version of game brings the old school roots back with retro game play, and superb music. Mega Man 9 is pretty daring stylist choice in 2008 is a very brain twisting game. Players can relive the Mega Man experience with classically inspired bosses, having their own strengths and weaknesses.It’s hard to imagine video games having a real history, especially since some of us were alive during the industry’s inception. But this addictive form of entertainment definitely has a traceable timeline which help to clue us in as to how we arrived at the powerful consoles and software of today.

Perhaps the most industry-changing epoch for gaming is known in many circles as the “8-bit Era.” The term ‘8-bit’ is describing the console processors of the time (in this case, the 80’s), but really, this huge point in gaming could easily be called the “Nintendo Era.” The NES was the first real console that shifted the focus of gaming from arcades to households. This, of course, created quite the gaming craze that has afforded some of the more potent IP’s of this time real staying power. Super Mario Bros. probably comes to mind first, but for some of the 8-bit faithful, Capcom’s Mega Man isn’t far behind Nintendo’s Italian plumber.



Have you seen the Microsoft commercial where people think they are using a new “Mojave” OS, when it’s really just Vista? Well, if you told those not familiar with the M.M. franchise that Mega Man 9 was an unreleased Nintendo port from the 80’s, they’d have to believe you. Mega Man 9 smacks of the 8-bit era in every single facet of its code; from the synth-pop sound track and move/jump/shoot controls, to the user interface and non-enhanced visuals. In fact, Mega Man 9 is as perfect as a copy of an 8-bit-era game can get. Nearly any gamer will find the level design and the usage of weapons “borrowed” from interesting level bosses quite delectable, but these are hardly good enough reasons to plop down the cash to download Mega Man 9.
Of course lackluster presentation, excruciating difficulty and an hour long title are all water-under-the-bridge items for the Mega Man or 8-bit gaming faithful. If you look at Mega Man 9 for what it really is– just another chapter in the 8-bit era of the series– then it’s easy to see how great it really is as well.

Every aspect of Mega Man 9 is better than the original, which is no small feat considering how good the first Mega Man was, and keeping in mind that this latest version is getting zero help from the 360’s advanced capabilities. Better level design and a bit more creativity when it comes to bosses and the weapon types available to Mega Man are really the difference makers here; two items that could have been done just as easily to a Mega Man sequel back in the 80’s. The ability to download game additions, Achievements and Leaderboards are enhancements of course, but Mega Man 9 doesn’t need these XBLA extras to be a great game to the M.M. and 8-bit fans.

When it comes to recommending Mega Man 9, it’s truly a know-who-you-are affair. Those that cringe at the site of the arcade or 8-bit style of games on XBLA need to stay far, far away from Mega Man 9; the difficulty and overall replay value will not sit well with you. But for those that are simply in love with the Mega Man IP, or those that continually pull out the NES for old time’s sake, Mega Man 9 is one is a rare treat– a tasty morsel likened to the decades-later discovery of a previously unreleased recording from Zeppelin, or similar rock gods.
